You should never undermine your diet. When people say they’re going on a ‘diet’, they believe that they’re going through a temporary change that will produce miracles, if they have the will power to stick with it. This thinking is the result of decades of fad diets that promise fast results with little to no effort. This usually was done in order to push some ‘miracle’ food that was found to have spectacular weight loss abilities. Many of us still remember the ‘cabbage’ diet. And then there was the ‘no-carb diet’, and the banana diet, and countless more. For the past 40 years diets have come and gone, with some being very ineffective, and others even dangerous.

Saying you are going on a diet, sort of implies that at some time you’ll be coming off the diet. You can fall off the diet, and return to your normal eating. But the real secret to losing weight and then keeping it off, is to ‘change’ the way you eat, not return to the way you ate when you realized you needed to lose weight. This is part of the reason so many diets fail. No diet should ever restrict the intake of necessary nutrients, and if it does, it’s destined to fail. To lose weight, and then maintain that loss, you need the right change in eating a balanced diet, in portions that are right for your body.

Don’t Restrict Your Calorie Intake

Here is a list of the most common mistakes in dieting that will undermine your efforts to lose weight:

Do not restrict your calorie intake to less than 1,000 calories per day, unless you are instructed to do so by a physician. When you restrict your intake that severely, you set yourself up for health complications. It can convince the body that it is starving, and it will slow down your metabolism in order to conserve and store food. This means it will kick into a gear that is designed to ‘Hold onto’ your fat to keep you from starving to death.

Don’t Miss Out Any Food Groups

You also don’t want to cut out any entire food groups. This includes fats. There are some fats that are necessary for your body to have to take in all the nutrients needed for you to stay healthy. Every food group has good or bad choices for consuming and affecting your weight loss. Choose the good ones, and your weight will drop without you having to compromise your health.

Never fast over long extended periods without some medical supervision. For the same reason you should not restrict your caloric intake to less than 1,000 a day, you should never embark of a fast that exceeds 48 hours without professional supervision.

A Nutritionist Will Help You With A Good Common Sense Diet Plan

Never purge. If you purge, either by diuretics, laxatives, or vomit-inducing, you rob your body of more of the necessary nutrients, than you manage to get rid of bad ones. You could easily end up in a worse state than when you started, with far more serious problems than a few extra pounds.

It is always smart to consult with your doctor before you take on any form of serious diet. They can recommend a nutritionist to help you with a good common sense plan that is right for your body. And they can map out a good healthy eating style for you that can become part of your lifestyle, and help you enjoy good health and maintain good weight for a lifetime.
